The two have traditional uses in construction and contractor work.

When you have a floor that’s not less than an inch and a half, you need screed. The material is made of sharp sand and cement and is used to finish off the job. The screed is usually left to bond with the floor, and its primary purpose is to provide a level surface.

Render, on the other hand, sees similar use on walls. In traditional use, it’s applied to create a surface that protects the base wall. It has to be thick enough to take punishment, but too thick and it will crack and fall off.

However, things are changing. To have the smoothest possible surface for a wall, you need to screed the wall. After that, the wall needs rendering. This applies in particular if the walls are made of a mix of sand and concrete.

Using screed mixed with rendering also creates a smoother finish, without any tiny pores. The overall look is more pleasing, even for a bare wall.
